Snijider Meeting Carl Jacobs Comparison & More

2012-05-20

Before his draft day, Ansgar Snijider was heavily compared to former Helsinki/New York sniper Carl Jacobs. Some thought this was a heavy tag to place on such a young player, but as Snijider's career advances they comparisons are looking more and more correct with each passing season. We will break down the comparison's between the 2 by their first 3 seasons and see how Snijider really compares to Jacobs.

Rookie Season
Jacobs
S11 (HSK) - 72GP / 20G / 45A / 65P / -10 / 34PIM / 14H / 456SH / 3GWG

Snijider
S25 (RIG) - 72GP/ 17G/ 18A/ 35P/ 0 / 108PIM / 236 H/ 194SH/ 1GWG

Clearly the edge in the rookie campaign belongs to Jacobs here, almost doubling Snijider's point output but not blowing him out of the water in terms of goals. But where the advantage for Snijider lies was in his physical play and defense on a team that was struggling to stay competitive at all times. Jacobs made the bigger impact his rookie season moreso than Snijider, but his lack of physical play would be what makes this closer than one would originally believe. Jacobs was entered in the draft expecting to make noise offensively unlike Snijider who was projected to be a grinder for at least his first season in the league. Jacobs would go onto become the model of consistency through his career and 65 points in his rookie season is nothing to slouch at.

Sophomore Season
Jacobs
S12 (HSK) - 72GP / 43G / 49A / 92P / +12 / 46PIM / 63H / 326SH / 3GWG

Snijider
S26 (RIG) - 72 GP/ 53G/ 54A/ 107P/ +11/ 81 PIM/ 243H/ 495SH/ 4GWG

Despite Snijider's lack of statistical output his rookie season, he managed to quickly end that flaw in his game in Season 26 where he broke the century mark in points, something that Jacobs did not do in his rookie campaign. Despite Jacobs having a very strong sophomore campaign in Season 12, Snijider managed to best him in all catagories at the same point in his career. Perhaps that almost taking 169 more shots was a factor, but Snijider's talent allowed him to make those opportunties to happen for him. Not to mention Snijider had obtained 53 goals, a number Jacobs would not best throughout his career. Snijider has the advantage clearly in both offense, defense, and physicality in the sophomore campaigns of the two.

3rd Season
Jacobs
S13 (HSK) - 72GP / 45G / 58A / 103P / +7 / 56PIM / 93H / 447SH / 6GWG

Snijider
S27 (RIG) - 72GP / 54G / 58A / 112P / +39 / 118PIM / 331H / 461SH/ 11GWG

Although not to the extent of the previous season, Snijider once again bested Jacobs in every aspect except assists which they tied at 58. Snijider would once again hit the 50 goal plateau and reach a number of goals that Jacobs would not touch in his career. But what made Jacobs so special were not his career highs or amount of goals, it was how consistent he was throughout his career while hitting those numbers. 6 out of Jacobs' 8 seasons he broke the century mark, something Snijider has already done twice. Although Snijider has seemingly so far bested the comparisons to Carl Jacobs, it remains to be seen if Snijider can find the type of consistency that Jacobs found his entire career. Not only that, but Jacobs was a crucial part of a cup run that saw the Helsinki Titans win a title in Season 15 which is something Snijider has yet to achieve.
